In 1981 McDonough was an intern at Enterprise Radio Network, a short-lived organization. At Syracuse, McDonough started his career as the play-by-play announcer for the International League’s Syracuse Chiefs in 1982.
McDonough was a PBS college analyst for the Ivy League, too. Between 1984 and 1985, he was a sideline reporter, and from 1986 to 1987, a play-by-play announcer.
